Marylana's Dream #2

$365.00

Marylana is dreaming of earning her art degree and growing her photography skills, and is in need of a camera. Fulfilling this dream would give her the opportunity to expand her creative abilities, explore a new artistic medium, and strengthen both her education and future career aspirations.

Marylana entered foster care at age 15, remained in care until aging out, and continued in extended foster care until she was 21. Since then, she has been navigating adulthood independently while balancing school, work, and the responsibilities of living on her own. Like many youth who age out of foster care, she has had to learn financial management, build stability without a family safety net, and overcome the challenges of independent living through determination and perseverance.

Today, Marylana is in school expecting to graduate in 2027 while also working part-time at the YWCA, where she supports youth programming. While pursuing her career goals, she intentionally integrates art into her education and is currently minoring in art. One of the classes in her program is photography, and she is excited to develop her skills in this creative field. Marylana believes photography is a powerful form of journalism—one that captures truth, tells meaningful stories, and can even serve as a tool for diplomacy and advocacy. She already enjoys photography as a hobby and dreams of continuing to grow with a professional camera that will allow her to fully participate in her coursework and further develop her artistic talents.

Marylana ultimately hopes to combine her passion for advocacy, education, and service by becoming a social worker who supports youth and young adults. She also plans to continue her education through graduate school, advocate for environmental conservation, and eventually serve as an environmental educator with the Peace Corps.

Friends describe Marylana as adventurous, loyal, and deeply passionate about making a difference. Whether she is hiking, creating art, or engaging in conversations about social change, she approaches life with curiosity and purpose. A camera would not only support her success as an art student but also provide another avenue for storytelling and advocacy as she continues building a future dedicated to serving others.
