Ashlee is dreaming of a gym membership. Fulfilling this dream will give her the opportunity to go to the gym consistently and pursue her goal of being mentally and physically strong. “Staying active is really important to me. It helps me feel physically strong, mentally clear, and emotionally balanced. With everything I’ve overcome as a foster youth, fitness has become one of the ways I take care of myself and build healthy routines.”
Ashlee has faced unimaginable trauma and loss in her young life. When she was twelve, she lost her mom to an overdose, and two years later, was placed in foster care because her father was incarcerated. She was in the system for four years before aging out at eighteen, and is now responsible not only for herself but for her younger sister who she cares for. Ashlee has remarkably overcome and is now in school full time, studying to become a licensed marriage and family therapist. In her own words, “My career goals are to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and open my own private practice to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care to individuals, couples, and families — especially those who have experienced hardship, like foster youth and others affected by trauma.”
