Ash's Dream #2
Ash is dreaming of becoming a tailor and needs a reliable sewing machine to grow his skills and begin building his small business. A quality sewing machine would allow him to create clothing, complete alterations, practice new techniques, and take the next step toward turning his passion for sewing into a meaningful career.
Ash’s passion for sewing began during his time in foster care. When donated clothing did not always fit properly or reflect his personal style, he began learning how to alter and transform what he had. Sewing became a creative outlet that helped him express himself and rebuild his confidence after experiencing bullying related to his clothing. What began as a way to make the clothes he had feel more like his own eventually became a passion with the potential to become a career.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ash put his growing sewing skills into action by creating protective masks that were both functional and creative. He made masks for friends and family and donated them to food pantries, nonprofits, and community organizations. As more people became interested in his work, he began selling some of his creations. This experience showed him that his creativity could become more than a hobby—it could become the foundation of a business.
Today, Ash is in his final year in college, where he is studying business administration and supervision and expects to graduate in May 2027. He is also working part time as a youth advocate and CASA volunteer, using his own foster care experience to advocate for young people and help improve the systems that serve them. He hopes to combine the business knowledge he is gaining in college with his sewing skills to create a successful and purpose-driven business.
Ash’s long-term vision is to create affordable, high-quality clothing. He wants people to have access to clothing that fits well, feels stylish, reflects their individuality, and is within their budget. Eventually, he hopes to grow from custom garments and alterations into a clothing brand while also creating opportunities to mentor other young people who have experienced foster care.
A reliable sewing machine would be a major investment in Ash’s future. The older machine he currently uses limits the materials and projects he can take on, while a dependable machine would give him the versatility to continue developing his skills and creating a wider range of garments and products. More than a piece of equipment, this machine would give Ash the opportunity to transform a passion that helped him through difficult experiences into a career built on creativity, independence, and purpose.
Ash has worked hard to build a future that reflects his potential rather than his past. His accomplishments in education, advocacy, leadership, and the arts demonstrate his determination to keep moving forward. By helping fulfill this dream, a donor would be giving Ash more than a sewing machine—they would be providing a tool that can help him build a business, create opportunities for others, and show fellow foster youth that their beginnings do not have to determine where they end up.
Cost of Dream: $569.50
